AI and automation are revolutionizing operations, replacing tasks once managed by humans with digital efficiency. While these technologies offer benefits in speed, scalability, and cost reduction, it's crucial to consider the contingency plans for system failures. This article is not about instilling fear but emphasizing the importance of due diligence and preparation. We (that’s a collective “we”) tend to rush implementation because of potential gains without asking the question “What do we lose?”.
Automation and AI efficiencies are crucial in our digital era. Industries like the Financial sector can automate transaction monitoring and Cybersecurity teams can automate alert response but that automation, if it fails, can result in significant operational blind spots, missed threats, and cascading failures that leave organizations vulnerable. Without a human-in-the-loop or a well-documented fallback plan, businesses risk delays in detecting fraud, security breaches going unnoticed, and an overall breakdown in critical decision-making. The key is not just implementing automation but ensuring there’s a plan and perhaps, a resilient human backstop ready to step in when needed.
Organic Intelligence, the unique human capacity for problem-solving, adaptability, and contextual understanding where automation may fall short.
Indulge me for a moment… In the 1993 movie, Demolition Man, the world has embraced extreme order, crime has been virtually eliminated, and society is governed by rigid, sanitized rules. Every aspect of life is controlled, from speech to physical interactions, all in the name of efficiency and harmony. Law enforcement has adapted to this environment, but in doing so, officers have lost their ability to respond to real, unscripted threats.
Enter Simon Phoenix (Wesley Snipes), a violent criminal from the past who is inadvertently unleashed upon this pacified society. The police, conditioned to handle only minor infractions, are utterly unprepared for his brutality. Their reliance on automated solutions, voice-controlled monitoring, AI-assisted policing, and predictive analytics, renders them ineffective when confronted with true unpredictability.
Desperate for a solution, they thaw out John Spartan (Sylvester Stallone), an old-school cop who was cryogenically frozen decades earlier. Unlike the officers of this futuristic world, Spartan understands chaos. He doesn’t need a playbook, his experience, adaptability, and instinct allow him to confront Phoenix head on. His ability to improvise and problem solve, qualities that had been deemed unnecessary in an automated society, become the very traits that save it.
Applying this to your organization: when substituting human-driven processes with automation, is there a robust playbook for potential system downtimes? Often, this playbook mirrors the tasks previously handled by humans. This perspective isn't a critique of AI but a reminder that resilience is paramount. Automation should enhance operations without rendering organizations vulnerable. A comprehensive strategy ensures that when unexpected events occur, your team is prepared to act decisively.
